My Story
I have loved to write for nearly as far back as I can remember. The application of pen or pencil to paper has been cathartic when things get stressful. I love my computer, but when I need to be especially creative, nothing can beat crafting words in handwritten script.
I completed the rough draft of my first novel in November 2012 for National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). I wanted to write a story from the perspective of a Child Welfare caseworker, in part to process my own experiences as a caseworker a couple of years prior. I wanted to share the kind of toll this sort of work can exact. I also wanted to explore the difficulty of being a parent unable to raise his or her own children.
In 2013, my husband and I became foster parents, eventually leading to adoption. Being a mom of high-needs children took nearly all my energy and brainpower, and I put my creative writing to the side, though I was blessed to be able to write regularly as a reporter for a local weekly paper.
I dabbled with my manuscript as I could, and even completed a rough draft of my second novel, dealing with near death experiences, during NaNoWriMo 2014.
I did less and less writing as a mysterious chronic illness began causing crushing fatigue and frequent, debilitating headaches, along with a host of other symptoms. After seeing doctors and specialists and undergoing many tests, I was told that everything came out "normal" and they hoped I would start feeling better. I finally found a natural health provider who was able to provide me with an answer: adrenal fatigue due to chronic stress. Armed with knowledge about what was happening and why, I was able to help my body start healing.
As I have begun recovery, I have found energy to begin writing again. I love trying to find ways to share hope through fiction. Life is difficult and often painful, but because of the love of Christ, we can have hope. My prayer is that I will be able to share that love and hope with others through the power of story.
